The first step in CNC lathe operation is workpiece setup, which involves mounting the workpiece securely in a chuck or collet, aligning it to ensure concentricity, and selecting the appropriate cutting tools based on the material and desired finish. Operators must then load the pre-programmed G-code or M-code into the CNC controller, which dictates the tools movement, feed rate, spindle speed, and cutting depth. Before starting the machining process, operators typically perform a dry runrunning the program without cutting toolsto verify that the toolpaths are correct and that there are no collisions between the tool, workpiece, or lathe components.

During operation, CNC lathe operators monitor the machines performance, checking for signs of tool wear, material defects, or programming errors.
